About Frank Herefords

At our ranch, we take great pride in our Hereford herd. We’ve meticulously paired each breed, resulting in one of Montana’s finest herds. Our dedication to excellence is evident in all aspects of our operation, from outstanding animal care to our meticulous selection of genetics. Our bulls are highly regarded for their ability to produce strong, long-lasting generations on ranches throughout Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and the Dakotas. Our customers return to us time and again because they see the exceptional performance of our calves, whether they need breeding heifers, steers that grow fast or bulls for their own herds. Our superior genetics are a perfect match for every ranch, and our reputation is evidence of the strong relationships we’ve built over time with our valued customers and long-standing ranch families.

2005

Frank Herefords was started by Austin Frank in Gillette, Wyoming when he was 26 years old. The herd started with 3 registered Hereford heifer calves acquired from Spear Two Ranches owned by Joe, Jodee, and Tony Kawulok. Joe was gracious enough to sell the registered heifers to Austin for current market price that fall. One of the herd ‘matriarchs’ purchased that year was AFH Princess 425 who would be the foundation bloodlines for Frank Herefords. This cow carried prefixes in her pedigree from both Holden Herefords and Cooper Herefords in Montana.

2008

Due to other job opportunities outside the cattle industry over the next few years, Austin relocated to Cheyenne, Wyoming without a place to pasture the cattle. Kawulok’s were willing to let Austin keep the cattle in Gillette, WY on a share basis until 2008 when he relocated once again to Greeley, Colorado and was able to lease ground in the surrounding areas. Once again he went back to the well and purchased 5 more heifers from Spear Two (4 registered Herefords and one black baldy) to incorporate into the herd. Austin attended the Colorado State University sale and purchased 2 more registered heifers (CSU Miss Dominator 8216 and CSU Miss Ram Dominator 8227) and also a bull from the CSU program (CSU RAM SECRET 8209 P42964174). This bull produced heifers and bulls that were sold by private treaty and also retained in the herd for years to come.

2009

Between 2009 and 2012 work would take Austin cross country again for work but the cattle remained in Colorado and Nebraska. The cattle were managed as a commercial set of cows but still kept the emphasis on purebred traits of calving ease, milk and growth, and phenotype to offer bulls and heifers to both commercial and seed stock cattlemen. Throughout those years bloodlines from other reputable breeders such as Largent and Sons (Kaycee, WY), Mohican West Polled Herefords (Laurel, MT), Pierson Cattle Company (Kaycee, WY), Ehlkes (Townsend, MT) were added into the herd.

2013

Austin made one more job transition to become employed by Miller International and was able to move back to Montana where he was born and raised. The cattle were still on lease ground until 2020 when Austin and his partner Josh Shengle purchased their current ranch on the East Rosebud River in Roscoe, MT. The home place includes 500 deeded acres with homes, barns, shops, and working facilities. They also lease over 3,000 acres of pasture and hay ground and are currently running 150-170 head of registered Herefords and commercial Angus cows (which are used as recips).
